What is STYE?

A stye, also known as a hordeolum, is a red, painful lump that forms on the edge of the eyelid. It occurs when one of the eyelid's oil glands becomes infected or blocked. Styes are usually caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus.

CAUSES OF STYE

The primary symptoms of a stye include a red, tender bump on the eyelid that may resemble a pimple. Other common symptoms include pain, swelling, and localized warmth. Sometimes, a stye can lead to excessive tearing or a feeling of grittiness in the affected eye.

Stye Symptoms

  • Redness: The affected area of the eyelid becomes red and inflamed.
  • Swelling: A tender, swollen lump develops on the edge or the inside of the eyelid. It may resemble a pimple or a small bump.
  • Pain and Tenderness: The stye is often painful and tender to the touch. It can cause discomfort, especially when blinking or touching the eyelid.
  • Sensitivity to Light: Some individuals with a stye may experience sensitivity to light (photophobia), causing discomfort in bright environments.
  • Localized Warmth: The area around the stye may feel warm to the touch due to the inflammation and increased blood flow.
  • Watering of the Eye: The eye affected by the stye may produce excessive tears or have increased tearing.
  • Blurred Vision (Rare): In certain cases, if the stye is large or affects the cornea, it can cause temporary blurred vision. However, this is relatively uncommon.
