What is GENITAL HERPES?

Genital Herpes is an extremely common STD caused by the transmission of the Herpes Simplex Virus Type-2. Individuals who contract the disease will have genital ulcers (outbreaks) for the rest of their life. The severity of genital eruptions varies over time, with the first episode being the most painful and emotionally challenging. Antiviral medications (Acyclovir and Valacyclovir) prescribed by a doctor can help reduce the severity and frequency of genital outbreaks. To minimize painful outbreaks, have medications on hand and take them as soon as you need them.

Transmission

You can get genital herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has the disease.

If you don't already have herpes, you can get it if you come into touch with the virus in the following places:

  • A herpes sore;
  • Saliva (if your partner is infected with oral herpes) or sexual transmission (if your partner is infected with genital herpes);
  • Skin in the mouth; if your partner has a genital herpes infection, or skin in the genital region.

Herpes can be contracted from a sex partner who does not have a visible sore or is unaware that he or she is sick. If you have oral sex with a sex partner who has or has had genital herpes, you may contract it.

Herpes cannot be contracted through toilet seats, mattresses, or swimming pools, nor can it be contracted from touching silverware, soap, or towels. Consider speaking with a healthcare expert if you have any more concerns about how herpes is transmitted.

Prevention

  • Avoid having vaginal, anal, or oral sex when you have herpes symptoms
  • Talk to your Alpha Provider about taking an anti-herpes medication every day

Treatment

Antiviral drugs can help persons with genital herpes outbreaks stay symptom-free for extended periods of time. When symptoms do flare up, these medications can help to lessen the severity and length of the symptoms. Drug therapy is not a cure for the disease, but it can make it easier to live with it.

Acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir are the three main medications used to treat genital herpes symptoms (Valtrex). All of these are administered as pills.

Note: We only recommend medicine if you've previously been diagnosed with herpes. If you haven't been diagnosed with herpes, we recommend seeing your local provider during your next outbreak for a diagnosis

The bad news is: herpes is not curable.

The good news is:it can be treated with medication to prevent outbreaks.
